Ville Platte man dies in fire, one person escapes

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a home fire that claimed the life of one man on May 15.

The Ville Platte Fire Department responded shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday morning to 111 West Hickory Street to a report that a home was on fire, said Butch Browning, Fire Marshal.

Firefighters arrived minutes later to discover that the residence was fully engulfed in flames. There were two people in the home at the time of the fire and one person managed to escape without injuries, Browning said.

Despite the heroic efforts of first responders, the other occupant died inside the home, said Browning.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate this tragic fire. Investigators identified the deceased man as Irving Antoine, 51, of Ville Platte, who was found in his bedroom.

The fire is still under investigation and no determinations have been made at this time, said Browning. There were no working smoke alarms operating at the time of the fire.

“This is a very sad death. We all hurt when the power of a fire takes a life," Browning said. "We will be working to determine the cause of this fire and help to assist the family cope with this tragedy. We remind all citizens that you must have working smoke alarms in your home."
