Zachary firefighters were in West Feliciana Parish this morning to perform a training exercise, but were called to assist in a fire that broke out in the historic district of downtown St. Francisville.

The St. Francisville Fire Department received a call about 8:15 a.m. Thursday of a fire in progress at Ferdinand and Commerce Streets.

Firefighters battled to save two buildings - one was the gift shop 'A Few of My Favorite Things' (near Magnolia Cafe), and the Blue Horse Saloon, said Mayor Billy D'Aquilla.

The fire began in the gift shop but quickly spread into the nearby saloon, said D'Aquilla. The Blue Horse Saloon is a total loss.

Fire crews worked for several hours to prevent the fire from spreading to other businesses, and reports from the scene say the fire is under control at this time.

Fire Investigators on the scene say the cause of the blaze is believed to be electrical but no final determination has been made.

As more details and photos from the scene come in, they will be posted on Zacharytoday.com.
