Library Director candidate to speak, interview

The Ad Hoc Search Committee of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library Board of Control interviewed five candidates for the position of Library Director via Skype on Saturday, Aug. 4. The committee voted unanimously to invite Mr. Spencer Watts to visit Baton Rouge for a second round of interviews.

The public is invited to attend a presentation by Watts where he will speak on the future of libraries at the Jones Creek Regional Branch Library, 6222 Jones Creek Road, on Friday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m.

The brief presentation will be followed by moderated questions from the audience and light refreshments.

On Saturday, Aug.18, at 9:30 a.m., Watts will be formally interviewed by the entire Library Board of Control, also at the Jones Creek Regional Branch. This meeting is open to the public.

Watts is currently Director of the Mobile Public Library in Mobile, Ala. Watts has been the Director in Mobile for 11 years.

The Mobile Public Library serves 369,000 people through nine locations and a bookmobile.

They have a $9.1 million budget. Former positions include Director, Roanoke County Public Library (VA) and positions at the Chesterfield County Public Library (VA).

Watts was Chair, Alabama Library Association, Public Library Division (2004) and won the Virginia Public Library Director of the Year (1998). He has been actively involved in strategic planning and a capital improvement program.
