U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., announced Tuesday more than $19.2 million for six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Louisiana.

The funds are provided through the U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education’s Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities program.

As a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, Sen. Landrieu routinely fights for funding for HBCU’s, and specifically requested this funding in the fiscal year 2012 appropriations bill.

“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a strong tradition in Louisiana,” Sen. Landrieu said. “They play an important role in developing the next generation of leaders and I have always supported providing them with the resources they need to offer quality academic programs. These grants help ensure that these institutions of higher learning continue providing a world-class education to their students who make strong contributions to our state.”

The five-year grants will include activities such as curriculum reform; counseling and student service programs; establishing teacher education programs designed to qualify students to teach; acquiring real-estate property in connection with construction, renovations, or additions that may improve campus facilities; and funding faculty and staff development.

In addition, funds may be used for the purchase, rental or lease of scientific or laboratory equipment and the development of academic instruction in disciplines in which African-Americans are underrepresented.

Tuesday’s grants include:

· $2 million to Dillard University in New Orleans

· $3.4 million to Grambling State University

· $5.3 million to Southern University & A&M College in Baton Rouge

· $2.5 million to Southern University New Orleans

· $2.8 million to Southern University Shreveport

· $3.2 million to Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans
