The canal was lined with concrete in the ‘60s and sinkholes have since encroached to within 30 feet of some homes, Heine said.
A work session will be held Sept. 17 to develop a strategy on how to address the erosion problem from Groom Road to the city limits.

STREET OVERLAYS: Southern Earth Sciences delivered its final report and discussed street overlays at a council work session Sept. 6. Barriere Construction is working on the punch list, has agreed to a three-year warranty and semiannual inspections. Final payment will be made when all work is completed to the city’s satisfaction.
HURRICANE ISAAC: The city has contracted with Allied Waste to handle storm debris pickup with FEMA paying 75 percent and the city, 25 percent, Mayor Harold Rideau said.
George Moore of Metro Roofing, Plank Road, is making repairs on the Municipal Auditorium roof. The new roof will be pitched instead of flat, will cost a little more and will be safer, Rideau said.
BAKER BUFFALO FESTIVAL: Chairwoman Ginger Vann presented an update on the festival activities, which last year generated $10,000 for Baker schools.
Major sponsors are Allied Waste, AT&T, BREC, Coca-Cola, Cox, Entergy, ExxonMobil and PEC.
RECYCLING: Charles Crittenden, 6505 East Myrtle St., suggested the city do more to promote recycling. Many residents are not aware that such a program exists, he said.
