The Zachary Area Reading Council sponsors an annual Young Authors contest for all grades in the Zachary school district. Several winners were recognized Sept. 13 by the Zachary School Board for their stories and poems written last school year.

Board President Jannie Rogers and Angie Cassard, Asst. Principal at Copper Mill, helped honor winners Olivia Wheat (poetry), Alex Manogin (poetry), Trent Flotte (non-fiction) and Lily Carter (fiction).

Winners not present at the meeting included: Kennedy Parker (fiction), Haylee Harp (fiction) and Myles Gray (fiction and non-fiction).

Newspapers in Education, sponsored by the Louisiana Reading Council, is an annual contest open to all students in Pre-K thru 12th grade.

The contest recognized students who created scrapbooks, wrote essays, designed ads or cartoon strips and who wrote stories based on interviews - all using a newspaper.

Each grade had a different project to complete.

Winners from the contest were recognized at the Sept. 13 ZCSB meeting by school board Vice President Gaynell Young and Peyton Gunnell, a Kindergarten teacher at Northwestern Elementary.

NIE winners from the Zachary school district included Ashley Johnson, Gabreyela Gonzales and Ma'at Firven.

In addition, Chrissy Ashford, secretary to the school board, was recognized for going Beyond the Call of Duty.

Rogers presented Ashford with a certificate commemorating her hard work at the Zachary School Board offices.
