A Zachary couple was arrested last week for having an illegal methamphetamine lab inside their apartment, Zachary Police Chief David McDavid said Friday.

Officers with the Delta Drug Task Force investigated information they received from neighbors about a possible meth lab inside the apartment at 1135 Willow Creek Drive, off Old Scenic Highway (La. 964) in Zachary, McDavid said.

The Zachary Police Chief said neighbors complained they smelled ammonia and other chemicals coming from the unit.

On Thursday, about 1:30 p.m., investigators searched the residence and found methamphetamine, which had recently been cooked, as well as other items typically used in making meth, said McDavid.

He said the odor was so strong Delta officers could smell the chemicals as they approached the apartment.

Jeremy Beavers, 37, and Marcelle Beavers, 38, were arrested Oct. 11 and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

The couple was charged with operation of a clandestine lab, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, McDavid said.

A hazardous materials team was also called to the scene to dispose of the chemicals used in cooking the meth, said McDavid.
