Despite impressive showings by both Zachary High teams, it was not to be for the Broncos this past weekend.

Both the boys and girls teams made it to the finals of the 2012 Herty Memorial Tournament, held Nov. 28 - Dec. 1, but each would lose, coming in second-place overall.

An accomplishment to be proud of, nonetheless.

The Lady Broncos felt the sting losing to the Baker High Lady Buffs, who won the annual Zachary tournament for the first time ever.

The Lady Buffs, led by Head Coach Matt Stephens, were impressive Saturday as they upset the previous tournament champions of 2010 and 2011.

Final score for the Lady Broncos vs. Lady Buffs on Saturday was 34-27.

On Friday night, it looked as thought the Lady Broncos were going to make it a three-repeat tournament victory when they defeated Albany High School 52-35.

MVP players from ZHS were Mariah Wright and Jasmine Mitchell with Baker's Anitra Whitfield named the tournament MVP.

The ZHS Bronco boys team made it to the finals after narrowly defeating New Iberia 38 - 36 on Friday, Nov. 30.

The boys played all games except those on Saturday at Northwestern Middle School.

On Saturday, the final game of the Herty Memorial tournament was played at 5:30 p.m. before a packed ZHS gym.

But the Hornets took an early first-quarter lead, and going into the half, Scotlandville led the Broncos 39 - 11.

The final score of the championship game would be the Hornets on top with 63 and the ZHS Broncos coming in second-place with a score of 32 points.

Tournament MVP from Scotlandville was Trelun Banks.

Cheryl Herty and Braden Herty, the late Zachary Police Chief John Herty's wife and grandson were present to hand out the tournament and MVP trophies.
