The Baker School Board adopted a modified redistricting plan and ordinance at its Dec. 4 meeting.

The redistricting changes were required because the previous plan, approved in October, did not comply with state law, Winston DeCuir, school board attorney, said.

The modified redistricting plan will be forwarded to the U.S. Justice Department for acceptance and, if accepted, will take effect with the 2014 election.

Board member Shona Boxie represents District 4 where she lived when she was elected in 2010. She has since moved into District 5 which is represented by Doris Alexander.

Alexander questioned if they would run against each other in 2014.

According to Edward Wisham, the demographer, Boxie can run under her old address in District 4 if she still owns the property and can prove that she lives there.

A-HEC PROGRAM: The board approved the “A-HEC of a Summer” program with Lane Regional Medical Center and the Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center.

Lane, Baker and Zachary school boards agreed to host a health career exploration program for 10 high-school students during June and July.

Participants will attend weekly educational workshops about careers and personal development, have lunch in the hospital cafeteria, wear hospital I.D. name tags, receive stethoscopes, scrub suits and instruction for CPR certification.

Participants will earn one-half unit of high-school credit for completing the program.

NEXT MEETING: The next meeting of the school board will be 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8.
