Firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire Tuesday night at 1008 Sinbad St. in Baker.

The call came in at 7:53 p.m. of a house fire in progress, said Howard Ward, Public Information Officer with the Baker FD.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy flames and smoke coming from the living room of the home, and the fire had already spread into the attic, said Ward.

Of the nine people who live in the home, eight were present when the blaze began, Ward said.

After a quick search and rescue of the residence, it was discovered that everyone was out of the home, and firefighters began battling the blaze to keep it from spreading throughout the entire structure.

Ward said early indications are that improper use of the fireplace in the home was most likely the cause of the blaze, but BFD fire investigators will continue their investigation to determine the exact cause.

Total damages are estimated to be about $85,000, Ward said.

Red Cross was called to assist the homeowners due to the extensive damage to the home.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Baker Police, Zachary FD, Baton Rouge FD HazMat Unit and EMS also responded to the scene.
