The Zachary Fire Department and Capt. Gordon Lipscomb spearheaded a fundraiser recently which raised funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The fundraiser, held during October's Breast Cancer Awareness month, invited local businesses to "purchase" pink firefighting helmets for $300 each.

Each business that bought a pink helmet had its name and ZFD initials inscribed on the helmet and then it was worn by a Zachary firefighter on all calls throughout the month of October.

At the end of the month, firefighters returned the helmets to the businesses for them to display inside their location for the rest of the year.

Next year, if the same business chooses to participate in the fundraiser again, the cost to "purchase" a helmet is $100. Each year the business participates, that year will also be inscribed on the helmet.

A total of 49 businesses joined in the fundraiser and $15,300 was raised. The cost to purchase the helmets was $13,266.13, with the remaining $2,033.87 going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

A check was presented to Janet-Dewey Kollen and Tonya Dixon on Thursday, Dec. 6.

Several Zachary firefighters have loved ones who have survived and/or lost the battle to breast cancer.

To participate in next year's fundraiser, please contact Capt. Gordon Lipscomb at the ZFD at 654-0026.
