The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) along with the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) held its second annual LHSAA State Cheer Championships Dec. 1 at the Lake Charles Civic Center.

More than 2,000 student-athletes participated in the event making it the third largest participatory LHSAA championship event behind outdoor track and field and cross country.

“This year’s state competition was a tremendous success...we exceeded our goal as the number of contestants grew significantly,” LHSAA Executive Director Kenny Henderson said.
The LHSAA hosted the first-ever LHSAA State Cheer and Dance Championships in 2011 in Lake Charles at the Lake Charles Civic Center, where more than 200 high school participants competed in various cheer divisions.

LHSAA Executive Director Kenneth Henderson as well as Jennifer Sword of UCA were on hand to present plaques and trophies to the winners.

Cheer teams from ZHS and Norhwestern Middle, as well as three recreational teams from Zachary Cheer Academy competed.

Results for Zachary teams from the 2012 LHSAA State Cheer Championshipare as follows:

Division - Team - Rank

Pee Wee Rec - Zachary Cheer White - 1st

Junior Rec - Zachary Cheer Red - 4th

Junior Rec - Zachary Cheer Black - 3rd

Junior High - NMS - 4th

Small CoEd - ZHS - 3rd

ZHS Cheer Coach and Zachary Cheer Academy's Shannon Milazzo said all her teams also recently competed in Jackson at the Universal Cheerleaders Association competition.

Zachary Cheer Black team won a first-place honor, as did Zachary Cheer White, and Zachary Cheer Red finished third.

At ZCA, these three teams compete in the recreation division, which consist of girls 12 and under, Milazzo said.

"Zachary High competes in the co-ed division and lost to the first place team by only three points," Milazzo said, "and Northwestern Middle was in a tight division as well."

All Zachary cheer teams will go on to compete soon at the National High School Cheer Championship in Orlando.
