Currently, a tornado watch is in effect for the parishes of East and West Baton Rouge, Livingston, St. Helena, Pointe Coupee, Tangipahoa and East and West Feliciana until 2 p.m.
Parts of Livingston Parish received about 8 inches of rain yesterday causing road and school closures.
The front is a classic pattern that brings heavy rains more typical of early spring than winter, meteorologist Fred Zeigler of the weather service’s Slidell office said.
Mild temperatures are expected with a high of 73 degrees today for Baton Rouge, according to a WAFB Weather forecast.
The region is expected to remain with light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms later in the day, including a flash flood watch, until 6 p.m. Thursday.
A flash flood watch means conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.
Citizens can expect an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain across the region today, with isolated areas receiving more rain before the weather system moves north toward the Great Lakes on Friday, he said.
Mayor-President Kip Holden issued a news release to East Baton Rouge Parish residents on Wednesday saying they should expect "flooding and possible sewer backups."
“We cannot overstress the importance of the care we need to take,” Holden said in the news release.
City-parish personnel will have barricades on standby in case of any flooding.
Fire stations in Ascension, EBR and Livingston parishes are offering sand bags to residents.

Drivers are urged to avoid being on the roads unless absolutely necessary and to be cautious of high winds and hydroplaning.
Also account for increased stopping by motorists.
