Coghlan, a Republican, succeeds Francis Nezianya, an Independent, of District 1.
Coghlan was elected to the Zachary City Council for the first time in 2006 and re-elected without opposition Oct. 2010.
A city counclman is elected Mayor Pro Tempore and acts as such during the absence of the actual mayor.
