Baker Mayor Harold Rideau and Zachary Mayor David Amrhein have announced that Friday, Feb. 1, will be Paint the Town Red Day for the 10th Anniversary of Wear Red Day.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in Louisiana and in the United States, and it kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined.

About 200 businesses in Zachary and 150 in Baker will compete in a contest to Paint the Town Red by decorating their business door red. The mayor of each town will then judge the front doors and select a winner on Thursday, Feb. 14.

The cost to participate is $50, and the money raised will stay in the Capital Area to fund educational programs and research.

Also, City of Zachary employees will wear red shirts on Friday, Feb. 1, and form a red “Z” with the employees in front of their office that day.

This initiative is a part of the America Goes Red campaign happening around the country that day. Additional information can be found at wearredday.goredforwomen.org/.

Letters were mailed to Zachary businesses on Jan. 11 from Mayor Amrhein asking for support.

Dear Prospective Supporters:

The City of Zachary is joining with the American Heart Association to combat and reduce the effects that cardiovascular disease has in our community.

The American Heart Association’s “America Goes Red” is empowering men and women by raising awareness, helping them make healthy lifestyle changes and raising funds for life saving research.

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women.

This year we are asking that you join with us to make a difference in our community.

On average, one woman in the United States dies from heart disease, stroke, or another cardiovascular disease every minute – that is 60 women during an hour. Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable.

I am asking that you support America Goes Red on Friday, Feb. 1 by participating in “Zachary Goes Red – Paint the Town Red”.

There are three ways your company can participate:

1. Enter the “Decorate Your Door Red” Contest- entrance fee is $50

2. Ask your employees to Wear Red on Feb. 1.

3. Sell Paper Hearts in your business.

I will have the honor of judging the “Decorate Your Door” contest on Thursday, Feb. 14.

The winner will receive a plaque, have their photograph posted on the American Heart Association’s Facebook page and receive bragging rights for a year.

Your help is critical! Together we can raise awareness, educate and hopefully prevent some of the devastation that heart disease has on our community.

Registration forms must be filled out and turned into City Hall by Friday, Jan. 25. (Registration forms were mailed out to Zachary businesses last week.)

Educational materials, paper hearts and “Wear Red Day” stickers are also available.

If you have any questions, Jody Dake, Event Specialist with American Heart Association, can be reached at 225-328-4551.

Thank you for your consideration, and I hope I can count on your support.

Sincerely,

David Amrhein

Mayor, City of Zachary
