National Arbor Day was observed in Baker on Jan. 24 with the planting of 11 trees: one crabapple, two redbuds, two native mulberries, two Chinese fringe trees, three purple-leafed plum trees with a loquat designated as the ceremonial tree.

Assisting in the planting of the loquat were Isaac Hawkins and Charles Haney of the Buildings and Grounds Beautification Department, Councilman Robert Young, Councilman Pete Heine, Mayor Harold Rideau and Councilwoman Joyce Burges.

While National Arbor Day isn’t until April 26, now is the proper time to plant trees here in the Deep South.
