A 62-year-old man remains in jail on manslaughter charges after shooting his 35-year-old son in an argument, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said last week.

Leroy Wilkerson, 62, of Zachary, is accused of shooting Aswan Wilkerson, 35, also of Zachary, in the leg during an altercation the two men had at the 21828 Samuels Road residence they shared.

According to an EBRSO news release, the father and son were arguing about 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the front yard of their home on Samuels Road.

The report states that Aswan Wilkerson was accused of attacking his father during the fight, and witnesses had to separate the two men. At that time, Leroy Wilkerson went inside the home and came back out a short time later with a pistol, allegedly shooting his son in the leg.

Authorities say that Leroy Wikerson called 911 and waited with his son until emergency personnel arrived.

Investigators said they believe Leroy Wilkerson accidentally shot his son in the leg.

Aswan Wilkerson was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery to his leg, the EBRSO report said.

Leroy Wilkerson was transported to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and booked with suspicion of attempted manslaughter.

However, on Monday, Feb. 18, Aswan Wilkerson died in the hospital where he was recovering from the gunshot wound to his leg.

The elder Wilkerson's charges were upgraded from attempted manslaughter to manslaughter.
