Chiefs Knaps, Browning reappointed to La. Drug Control, Violent Crime Board

Gov. Bobby Jindal announced reappointments on March 15 to the Louisiana Drug Control and Violent Crime Policy Board.

The Louisiana Drug Control and Violent Crime Policy Board serves to develop a statewide drug control and violent crime strategy and advise the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice.

The board is comprised of 18 members, including the superintendent of the Department of Public Safety, the executive director of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association, the executive director of the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association, or their designees. The remaining fifteen members are the following gubernatorial appointees:

• Three district attorneys, one each from the eastern, western, and middle areas of Louisiana;

• Three sheriffs, one each from the eastern, western, and middle areas of Louisiana;

• Three chiefs of police, one each from the eastern, western, and middle areas of Louisiana;

• One marshal or constable selected from the eastern, western, or middle areas of Louisiana; and

• Five at-large members who are active private citizens in community drug control and prevention and may be former members of the state judiciary.

Reappointments to the Louisiana Drug Control and Violent Crime Policy Board include:

Mike “Snapper” Knaps, of Baker, who is the Chief of Police and Marshal for Baker. Chief Knaps will be reappointed to serve as a marshal on the board from the eastern area of the state, as required by statute.

James “Doug” Browning, of Central, is the Chief of Police for Central. Chief Browning will be reappointed to serve as a Chief of Police from the middle area of the state, as required by statute.

• Jack Strain, of Abita Springs, is the sheriff of St. Tammany Parish. Sheriff Strain will be reappointed to serve as the sheriff from the eastern area of Louisiana, as required by statute.

• Wayne Melancon, of Crowley, is the sheriff of Acadia Parish. Sheriff Melancon will be reappointed to serve as the sheriff from the western area of Louisiana, as required by statute.

• Michael Cassidy, of Jennings, is the District Attorney for the 31st Judicial District. Cassidy will be reappointed to serve as District Attorney from the middle area of the state, as required by statute.
