Morganza--Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop A are investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on La. Hwy. 1 near the Morganza Spillway in Pointe Coupee Parish, said TFC Russell Graham in a news release Wednesday.

The crash occurred Oct. 3 shortly after 1 p.m., and Troopers spent several hours on the scene of the crash investigating, Graham said.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Jason Weill, 34, of Abbeville, was driving a 2009 Toyota Yaris north on La. 1 when he passed several vehicles also traveling northbound, Graham said.

As Weill attempted to move back into the northbound lane after passing the vehicle, he lost control of his vehicle. The Toyota began to rotate clockwise, continuing northbound in the southbound lane, and was struck on the driver’s side door by a southbound Ford F-350 Pickup, said Graham.

Both vehicles came to rest in the roadway.

Weill suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner’s Office, Graham reported.

The driver of the pickup, Larry Robillard, 58, of Glynn, La., sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene.

Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the crash. However, Troopers have submitted a sample of Weill’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis, TFC Graham said.

Robillard voluntarily submitted a breath sample to Troopers that showed he had no detectable alcohol in his system. No charges have been filed in connection with this crash, said Graham.

There have been several fatal crashes in the Troop A area over the past week. The common factor in each of these crashes was that they were all avoidable.

Troopers remind motorists that most crashes are avoidable and are caused by driver error.

Motorists should remain vigilant at all times while behind the wheel and follow all the rules of the road.

Following the posted speed limit, never driving beyond the vehicle’s capabilities, always driving defensively and never taking your eyes off the road are just a few ways to increase safety and decrease the chances of a motor vehicle crash occurring.

While not all crashes are survivable, it is important to note that the single most effective way to minimize chances of serious injuries and deaths in crashes is to always be properly restrained.
