Since its inception, Capital Area CASA Association has trained 968 volunteers to provide a voice in
court for more than 1,800 children.
A Seattle Judge founded the first CASA program in 1977. He felt each child in an abuse case should
have one special advocate for the life of his or her case. Through the efforts of local citizens, Capital
Area CASA was officially established as a private, non-profit organization in 1992.
On Sept. 29, 1992, the first two CASA volunteers in East Baton Rouge Parish, Susan van Beuningen and the late Montee
Milner, were sworn in. Twenty years later, Capital Area CASA continues to recruit volunteers to ensure
that every abused and neglected child in East Baton Rouge Parish will find a safe, permanent home.
