Acadiana High ends Broncos'season

SCOTT – Acadiana High exploded for 34 first-quarter points as the Wrecking Rams slammed the door Zachary’s season with a 75-21 win over the Broncos in the opening round of the Class 5-A state playoffs.

The No. 11 Rams scored first on a 27-yard run by Jeff Brown before the AHS defense took over with a 75-yard fumble return by Zack Burch and a 17-yard interception return by D’ondre Chanet.

Acadiana (8-2) then forged ahead 34-0 on Brown’s 63-yard run and an 8-yard run by Keith Sonnier

No. 22 Zachary (8-3) closed the gap to 34-7 in the second quarter when Dillon Beard hauled in a 30-yard pass from Mason Pace and Brandon Delhom added the extra point.

Cardaye Spencer scored on a 67-yard run for the Rams before Zachary’s Aaron Simon scored on a 72-yard pass from Pace to close the gap to 41-14.

Spencer’s 15-yard run and a 13-yard touchdown by Sonnier gave the Rams a 55-14 advantage as Acadiana scored on every offensive possession in the first half.

Dylan Scott scored twice in the third period on runs of 77- and 6-yards to push the defending 5-A champion Rams ahead, 69-14.

The Broncos scored on a 35-yard pass from Pace to Connor Haynes and Delhom’s final PAT closed the gap to 69-21.

Acadiana tied a school record for points when Edward Cormier scored on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Rams rolled up 556 yards rushing, led by Spencer (10-131), Scott (10-123), Brown (3-96) and Sonnier (7-84).

Ladarruis Vessell led the Broncos with 128 yards on 17 carries, while Pace completed 17-of-34 for 266 yards and three touchdowns.

Aaron Simon had two catches for 81 yards and a touchdown as team mate Beard had three catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.

The loss marked the second straight year the Broncos have ended their year with a loss to Acadiana.

The Rams beat Zachary 49-7 in the second round last season before winning the state championship.
