ALEXANDRIA – The City Council has approved an ordinance permitting agreement between the city and a development to salvage the historic Hotel Bentley.

The agreement permits businessman Mike Jenkins, who has agreed to buy the now-closed hotel from Robert Dean, Jr. of Baton Rouge, to lease parking space from the city, as well as take advantage of other incentives proposed by the city.

Jenkins plans to convert the building across from City Hall in downtown Alexandria into 28 condominiums and a 90-room hotel.

The hotel was opened by lumber magnate Joseph Bentley early in the 20th Century. According one version, he built what became one of the grand hotels in the South after being refused service at another hotel due to his appearance after being in the backwoods for an extended time
