In 1970, the first Beta Sigma Phi chapter, Epsilon Sigma, was formed under the ritual of Jewels Degree and the charter members were Linda Buller, Judy Domingue, Joan F. Fontenot, Sybil L. Herron, Bonnie Hollier, Elizabeth D. Lafleur, Sharon B. Landreneau, Diana A. Reed, Betty Skinner, Jo Alice Soileau and Margie N. Whittington.
Many members now hold lifetime memberships. The parent organization has established a series of honors that can be earned by a member/members, and the Order of the Rose, designed to express the gratitude and esteem of a chapter toward an active member, has been earned by all members. The Silver Circle honor is presented to members who have been actively involved in Beta Sigma Phi for over 25 years.
The first Alpha Delta Chapter meeting, known as Beginner’s Day, was held at the home of incoming president Lola Fontenot August 19. At that meeting, members decided to change from a traditional to career chapter. Members will now meet once a month. The president handed out inserts for the yearbook. The executive board voted to meet at a later time to make the necessary changes in the yearbook.
Members traveled to the home of Rose Frey in Carencro for the September 19, meeting. President Fontenot read a thank you note received from the E.J. Deville family. The yearbook was reviewed and the schedule of meetings and committees, socials and cultural meetings were discussed. In new business, a $100 donation was made to purchase a brick for the Evangeline Project, and a $25 donation for Muscular Dystrophy was approved as budgeted. The cultural program presented by Rose Frey and Bobbie Feucht was on the Suez Canal.
Bettie Lafleur hosted the October 7, meeting. Service committee members Becky Buller, Joan Fontenot and Mattie Buller asked members to donate items of clothing to the local Boy Scout group for victims of Hurricane Ike. Margie Whittington and Janella Soileau invited members to a dinner and a movie October 14. Lafleur provided members with very useful cooking hints. Mary Alice Fontenot and committee members organized a Fun Day outing at the Fontenot Camp October 26, for the annual Husbands’ Social. Members enjoyed a Cajun barbecue, four-wheeler riding and the great outdoors.
Diana Reed hosted the November 3, meeting. Margie Whittington and Sherry Vidrine handed out the Christmas social invitations. The social will be held at Whittington’s home December 9. Each member will bring an item from their home for a White Elephant game. The cultural portion of the meeting was “Always be Prepared,” and Reed handed out brochures on safety in the home.
