The investigation revealed that on Friday, Nov. 2, shortly after 6 p.m., bicyclist Logan Bergeron, 14, of Gray, La., was traveling westbound on Country Estates Drive in the westbound lane as a 1998 Dodge Ram truck was traveling eastbound on Country Estates Drive, Harrell said.
The Dodge was being driven by Stephen Pellegrin, 28, of Houma.
As the Dodge Ram approached, Bergeron entered the eastbound lane of Country Estates Dr. and was struck, said Harrell.
Pellegrin, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash, but Bergeron was ejected from the bicycle and transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries that he later died from, reports Tpr. Harrell.
Pellegrin submitted to a breath test and was found to be above the legal BAC limit of .08, Harrell said.
Pellegrin was arrested for DWI and further charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement.
While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury.
According to Louisiana State Law, bicycles must travel in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic laws. Bicycles must also have a lamp mounted on the front that shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front.
They shall also have a lamp mounted on the rear that will emit either a flashing or steady red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear.
Remember to wear bright and reflective clothing when walking or bicycling at night.
Motorists who witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
