Broncos wipe out Walker, 49-18

Zachary rolled up 539 yards of total offense as the Broncos cruised to a 49-18 District 4-5A home victory Friday over Walker.

After losses to Central and Scotlandville, the Broncos (5-3, 1-2) earned their first district win of the season and travel to Live Oak (4-4, 1-2) this week.

Walker (2-6, 0-3) scored first on a three-yard run by Tyler Lockhart but the two-point conversion pass attempt failed.

The Broncos responded with a 79-yard pass from Trey Hills to Forrest Town and Jacob Garrett’s kick pushed Zachary ahead, 7-6.

ZHS senior Donald Gage scored twice in the second quarter, first on a 3-yard pass from Hills and then on a 56-yard punt return.

Boston Scott scored on a 1-yard run and Garrett’s PAT pushed the Broncos ahead, 28-6.

Walker scored on a 21-yard pass from Lockhart to Brice Brown to close the gap to 28-12 at the break.

Gage displayed his speed again in the third period when he raced 50 yards with a pass from Hills and later scored on a 48-yard punt return as the Broncos exploded for a 42-12 lead.

Walker’s final points came on a 15-yard pass from Lockhart to Brown (8-87).

Lockhart completed 14 of 25 passes with an interception and 155 yards and rushed 19 times for 83 yards.

Scott scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter and Garrett’s PAT made the final margin, 49-18.

Hills completed 16 of 25 passes for 332 yards, one interception and three touchdowns.

Gage caught six passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Town had 12 carries for 97 yards and four catches for 122 yards.

Zachary finished with 332 yards passing and 207 yards on the ground, while Walker had 143 yards rushing and 155 more through the air.

ZHS Homecoming

At halftime, the 2012 ZHS Homecoming maids were presented on the 50-yard line with their escorts beginning with Freshmen maids Kayla Davis, Aryanna Kelly and Haley Sullivan.

Sophomore maids followed with Katelyn Hardin, Myiah Smothers and Kendall Stewart.

Junior maids McKae Chaney, Courtney Davis and Erin Mann were then escorted followed by Seniors Elyxcus Anaya, Destiny Johnson, Jasmine Littles and Deon Summer.

2011 Homecoming Queen Bria Reed crowned Destiny Johnson the 2012 Queen for Zachary High.

Johnson was escorted by her older brother, Byron Johnson II, a former Bronco wide receiver who signed with Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., last year.

The ZHS Cheer Clinic participants also cheered on Friday night in Bronco Stadium with the Varsity Cheerleaders by their side.
