The Zachary offense rolled up 420 yards of total offense as the Broncos grabbed a 65-40 win over Southern Lab on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Hurricane Isaac forced the cancellation of the season opener against Catholic, but the 5-A Broncos picked up a game against the 1-A Kittens.

Zachary jumped out to a 30-6 first quarter lead begun when Donald Gage scored on a 28-yard pass from Trey Hills and Boston Scott added the two-point conversion.

Larry Cage scored on 46-yard fumble recovery and Jacob Garrett’s PAT gave the Broncos a 15-0 advantage.

After Southern Lab scored on a 61-yard pass play, Zachary’s Forrest Town scored on a 1-yd run and Trey Hills added the two-point conversion for a 23-6 margin.

The Broncos pushed ahead 30-6 when Evan Pace scored on a 56-yard interception return and Garrett added the PAT.

Zachary pushed ahead 37-6 in the second period, aided by a 15-yard scoring pass from Hills to Trey Leiva and Garrett added the extra point.

After Southern Lab scored on a 46-yard pass play, the Broncos responded with a 26-yard scoring pass from Hills to Kentrell Fisher and Garrett added the PAT for a 44-12 lead.

The Kittens scored on a 7-yard pass play, but the Broncos answered with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Hills to Donald Gage as Zachary forged ahead, 51-18 at the break.

Southern Lab outscored the Broncos 22-14 in the second half as the Kittens finished with 410 yards of total offense.

The Kittens scored on a 44-yard pass play, but the Broncos answered again this time with a 22-yard strike from Hills to Forrest Town as Zachary moved ahead 58-24.

Southern Lab added scoring runs of 3-and 52-yards in the fourth quarter, while Zachary closed its offensive barrage with a 40-yard scoring pass from Gabe Hannum to Fisher.

Bronco quarterback Hills completed 13-of-18 passes for 251 yards and threw five touchdowns in the win. Mills also gained 27 yards on four carries.

Hannum went 1-for-1 including a 40-yard touchdown pass for the Broncos.

To Mrs. Judy White, I think that you was totally out of order with your comment. How do you know that the boys didnt attend church on Sunday. My son went to church Sunday for 11am, how do you know other parents didn't take their kids to church early that morning. You was being judgmental and only God judges us, because you don't know what's in a person's heart or they relationship with God.

I have a problem with our Zachary Broncos playing on Sunday. Many other teams played on Saturday. Why not us?

Sunday is God's day. Parents and young people should be in church on that day.

Not being derogatory but when sports comes before God, there is a problem.

"Not a big sports fan?" you say. NO. I have played/competed in almost EVERY sport and went to State in softball. Gave it up when we tournaments started interfering with being in God's house.

NO ONE LOVES SPORTS & LSU MORE THAN ME, but God comes first, whether it be sports, concerts, tv programs, etc.

Parents, I urge you to think about this. If your child does or doesn't go "pro" and even if they do, where will they spend eternity?

"Raise up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

With all love and respect,

Judy D. White

Hello to the fan that had a problem with the Sunday game. Due to the hurricane the schedules were back & forth. We were scheduled to play Catholic on Saturday, but due to the boys not having enough practice time, the only other time available was Sunday. This is not something that was planned, nor will be in the future because the games are scheduled on Friday nights...I agree with you about Sunday and the possibility of missing church, but what you fail to realize is that everyday is the Lord's day. Going to church every Sunday don't make you a Saint, just like missing one service don't make you a sinner. God judges your heart & what you do on Earth, not how many times you sit in a man made building on Sundays..You can worship God anywhere, & with the God fearing Head Coach that Weiner is, I don't feel in no way, form or fashion that he would jeopardize any of those boys' soul! If you want to miss things on Sunday because of your Faith, that's fine but don't try & poison someone's mind with your unwanted judgement. Everyone has their own relationship with God, & that's one of the problems of the world Today, worried about other things beyond your control.. From 1 opinion to another. May God bless you & keep you..
