On Aug. 15, Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) will celebrate its 27th anniversary of service for preventing and treating cardiovascular disease in patients throughout south Louisiana and beyond.

Since its start in 1983, CIS has grown from a one-man practice under the leadership of Dr. Craig Walker in Houma to a world-renowned practice with about 30 physicians and nearly 500 team members in 10 cities throughout south Louisiana.

From the beginning, Dr. Walker envisioned the institute as a center for the development of new and improved techniques and technologies for the treatment of both coronary and peripheral arterial disease. At the time, Houma had one of the highest incidences of cardiovascular disease in the nation.

Through the years, CIS has made significant contributions to the advancement and development of non-surgical treatments for cardiovascular disease. The institute has earned an international reputation for providing state-of-the-art cardiovascular care and being a world-leader in treating peripheral arterial disease.

In addition, CIS has received international acclaim as a leader of research and development by participating in clinical research trials.

CIS physicians continue to serve as clinical investigators for many new and innovative medical devices and often share their knowledge by lecturing around the country about the latest methods of treating both cardiac and peripheral arterial disease.

“In 27 years, CIS has demonstrated impressive growth and is recognized internationally for advanced cardiovascular care,” said Dr. Walker. “Patients from around the world have come here for treatment, and physicians from around the world have come to learn new therapies pioneered at CIS.”

Today, CIS continues to grow and expand to multiple locations to make the most advanced cardiovascular care accessible to a variety of communities.

Within the past year, CIS has opened new clinics in Galliano and Youngsville.

“We plan to continue to expand our practice so that our advanced care is more accessible and convenient for those that we serve,” said Dr. Walker. “Our patients come first.”

CIS is one of the most respected groups of cardiologists, representing nearly every specialty in heart and circulatory medicine.

With a team of nearly 500 dedicated team members, CIS serves communities throughout Louisiana, as well as national and international patients, at its 10 clinics. CIS consistently positions itself at the forefront of technology by providing the most up-to-date technology coupled with compassionate care. This mission has guided the institute for more than 27 years of service to south Louisiana. For more information about CIS, call
