SHREVEPORT – Services will be Sept. 15 for Lt. Col. Clarence Blanton, whose remains were identified in August after being recovered in Southeast Asia.
Blanton, assigned to a until at Barksdale AFB and detailed to Southeast Asia in October 1967, was on duty at Site 85 in Laos when the area was struck by hostile enemy rocket and infantry attacks and overrun on March 11, 1968.
Blanton and 10 others were listed as Killed in Action/Body Not Recovered.
Remains were recovered and identified by the Central Identification Lab in Hawaii.
Survivors include his wife Norman and a daughter.
Former forestry, education lobbyist
ALEXANDRIA – Services for former police juror and forestry and education lobbyist William Matthews are Monday. He died Sept. 6 at age 84.
He was executive director and lobbyist for the Louisiana Forestry Association for 19 years, then worked for Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana (APEL).
Survivors include his wife Elizabeth two sons and a daughter.
Businessman, wounded deputy
LAFAYETTE – Services for businessman Wilbert Tabb, Sr. will be Monday. He died Sept. 5 at age 80.
He was a Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Deputy until shot in the line of duty and paralyzed. Subsequently, he owned and operated The Jumbo Inn on Simcoe Street and Tabb’s Mexican Import Shop.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Martin & Castille.
Pesticide expert
BATON ROUGE – Services for entomologist and zoologist Dr. Mary Grodner will be Tuesday. She died Sept. 5 at age 77.
She was a former assistant professor at LSU and long-time Pesticide Safety Specialist for the LSU Agricultural Center and pesticide coordinator for the state. She was a founding member and past president of the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators and recipient of a number of professional awards.
Survivors include her husband Robert and two sons.
History professor
MONROE – Services for ULM professor of emeritus of history Dr. William Walker, Jr., were Saturday. He died Sept. 5 at age 91.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, who was a professor at ULM for 31 years, including service as department chair.
Survivors include his wife Martha, a son and two step-daughters.
