Peterman said the reptile crossed his driveway right after some neighborhood kids walked by when he discovered it and ran to get a shovel.
The reptile had eight rattles and was about three inches wide across his back, Peterman said.
"After a couple of whacks with the shovel, the rattlesnake was dead," Peterman said.
The Zachary native says he believes the large snake came from a nearby wooded lot that was in the process of getting cleared out by a man.
Peterman said it's not the first time he's killed rattlers in his yard, and he says he recently killed an even bigger snake in Port Hudson.
Yikes!
