The Vikings almost pulled off an upset, but a fourth-quarter field goal lifted undefeated Jewel Sumner to a 9-6 win over Northeast.

In a close battle where Northeast outgained Jewel Sumner 221 to 177 yards, defense kept the game close.

After a scoreless first quarter, Leonel Moreno hit field goals of 26 and 23 yards to give Jewel Sumner (4-0) a 6-0 lead at intermission.

Neither team scored in the third period, but Moreno’s 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter pushed Jewel Sumner ahead 9-0.

Northeast’s Patrick Rivers caught a 9-yard pass from Jarvis Houston to close the gap to 9-6 but that was a close as the Vikings (1-3) could get.

Northeast visits Southern Lab (2-2) this week. The Kittens defeated Baker 20-6 to hand the Buffaloes their first loss of the season.
