The Zachary City Council meeting began Sept. 25 by recognizing three Sammy's Grill employees - owner Jason Jackson, Joel Frosch and Nathan Roose - for their generosity during Hurricane Isaac.

The three men, on behalf of Sammy's Grill in Zachary, made sure that Zachary city employees, firefighters and police officers received hot meals during the many overtime hours they put in working to keep city services up and running, said Mayor David Amrhein.

Zachary Fire Chief Danny Kimble presented Frosch, Roose and Jackson with an honorary helmet commemorating their generosity. Zachary firefighting personnel were also in attendance as were the families of the three men.

Other City Council agenda items included:

WAIVERS: A home occupational waiver was granted to Mark Chidester, 5557 Jane Marie in Zachary, which will allow him to sell firearms through his internet business. Chidester said the weapons will be direct-shipped from the distributor to the buyer, and no firearms will be stored at his residence, Chidester said.

ORDINANCES: "In an effort to prosecute in Zachary court, we need to put these on the books," City Attorney John Hopewell said. Following public hearings, ordinances were adopted pertaining to synthetic marijuana, credit card processing fees and delinquent license fees.

Following approval of the ordinances, the council approved setting administrative processing fees 2.5 - 5 percent.

Previously, the council approved paying utility bills online with credit and debit cards, but a contract had not been solidified with a credit company as of yet.

"Hopefully the start date will be Oct. 15 when we can begin accepting credit cards online and at the utility office," Amrhein said.

FEES: In a 3-2 vote, councilmembers agreed to review a resolution that would lower the charge of reconnecting gas and water service from $50 to $25. However, a $50 fee would be added for those customers wishing to have their service turned on the same day after 4 p.m.

Councilmen Brandon Noel, Dan Wallis and Tommy Womack voted in favor of the new fees, while Councilmen John Coghlan and Francis Nezianya voted against.

ANNISON HOUSE: The council tabled the decision to terminate the City of Zachary's temporary stewardship of the Annison Plantation House until they can contact the family.

The home was donated to the city in 2002, but repairs and upkeep have proved too expensive, the mayor said.

BREC, which was considering taking on the antebellum home, have also negated their interest due to the costly renovations.

The Zachary City Council will meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
