Neva, who credits her longevity to God and being married, celebrated her 106th birthday on the arms of her loving husband, Lamar Henderson, 95.
"We've been married for 38 years and six days," Lamar Henderson said.
"I feel fine," Neva says. "I enjoy most anything fun!"
Still sharp as a tack, Neva enjoys sitting outside in the gazebo at Oakwood Village where she and her husband have lived since 2006. She likes to sing, play piano, attend church service every Sunday and keep score at the Oakwood's resident softball games.
Born in what was then considered the Oklahoma Territory in 1906, Neva worked most of her life outside on a farm doing "hard work," Lamar said of his wife.
"She's a bit hard of hearing and until recently, walked just fine," said Lamar. "A foot injury has kept her in a wheelchair for the past three months."
"I've been healthy my whole life. I had the measles and mumps when I was young," Neva says. "I credit God for my long life."
The couple never had any children together, but his three kids are her kids, and they have 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The Oakwood staff presented Neva with a beautiful bouquet of flowers on her birthday, and the other residents celebrated the day by enjoying birthday cake.
One OV staffer says that the Social Security office will come out every so often to see for themselves if Neva's birthdate is correct - Oct. 18, 1906!
"She asks me why we don't talk much anymore, and I tell her 'I've said all I needed to say 15 years ago!'" Lamar joked about his 106-year-old wife. Happy Birthday, Neva!
