The Broncos served notice that the rest of Class 5A should pay close attention to the Zachary Football program. For their efforts and outstanding play on the field, several of Zachary’s football players received post season honors, and Weiner was named the district’s outstanding coach of the year along with Central Coach Doug Dotson.
Six players were named to the 5-5A All-District 1st team units while eight more players earned second team honors. The Broncos had a solid season earning a share of the 5-5A title and they also advanced to the Class 5A playoffs.
The Broncos earned the 11th seed in the post season and hosted a home game when they defeated the Assumption Mustangs 44-35 in the bi-district round of the Class 5A playoffs.
The Broncos season came to an end the following week as they fell to the eventual state champion Acadiana Rams 49-7 in the regional parings.
Players that were named to the 5-5A 1st Team Offense included Junior Running Back Ron Pennington, Junior Wide Receiver Dillon Beard and two of the Broncos Offensive Linemen were also honored: Sophomore Offensive Guard Chris Taylor and Senior Tackle Ethan Downs were both honored. Two players picked up 1st team defensive honors. Senior Defensive Linemen Dez Coleman and Senior Linebacker Kevin Phillips were both recognized for their play in the 2010 season.
Offensive players that were named to the 2nd team were QB Darol Dewey, RB Ladarrius Vessell, TE Hollis King, WR David Deloach and OG Carson Free.
Three more players were named to the 5-5A 2nd Team Defense: Defensive Lineman Jevonta Williams, Linebacker Brant Hernandez and Defensive Back Byron Stevens were all honored for their play as well.
