The Zachary High School Broncos defended their state championship title and swept the Louisiana High School Olympic Weightlifting Championships held April 15-16 at ZHS. Zachary won for the second year in a row in both the boys and girls divisions. Way to go, Broncos!

"What makes this achievement especially rewarding," says Robbie Yellott, Zachary's strength and conditioning coach, "is that the past two years we've won have been the only two years we’ve competed."

Zachary competed and defeated 11 other high schools from around the state as the powerlifters were scored on a combination of what they snatched and clean and jerked.

The two-for-two Bronco weightlifting group is also an equal opportunity team that welcomes four girls to the mix. The ladies helped the 10 guys on the team compete and bring home the trophies for Zachary High.

Although most of the athletes in the group have been training all year for the other sports in which they compete, all the student athletes have been strength training and muscle conditioning under the watchful eye of coach Yellott.

The ladies who powerlift include Brittany Castello and Erin Peroyea who also play volleyball, and Aubin Brian and Rachel Babin who also play soccer. Most of the guys excel in both powerlifting and an additional sport such as football.

The ZHS powerlifters are listed in the place they finished, their class, total weight lifted and special awards.

Congratulations, ZHS!
