Facing a million-dollar budget cut from the state, the Baker School Board received a report on revenue and expenditures at its April 5 meeting.

Meanwhile expenses are expected to increase with salaries forming 61 percent of the increase. Health insurance and teacher retirement costs will also increase.

To address these difficulties, David Timoll, human resources supervisor, offered a variety of possibilities, including reducing and consolidating staff, not providing transportation for field trips, reducing central office work days.

Also reducing after-school programs, reducing supplemental pay for travel, reducing bus routes and upgrading facilities for energy efficiency.

Timoll stressed that while many options are being considered, no decisions have been made.

In other business:

Marcus Machon, account representative, Johnson Controls, made a presentation on the chiller at Baker High School. The item was tabled until the April 19 work session.

Approved a contract with Josie Williams for a maximum of $22,800 to assist with the establishment of Park Ridge Academic Magnet School.

Agreed to pay extra compensation to Jared Wall to teach Early Start (dual enrollment) at Baker High School.

Approved a contract with the International Center for Leadership in Education Inc. to upgrade the school system’s program for students with disabilities. The contract will be paid for by a State Department of Education grant.

Approved an agreement with the Louisiana Virtual School to provide students access to online LVS courses.

Tabled a discussion on uniforms for the Upper Elementary Mixed Choir until the choir director is consulted.

The next board meeting will be May 3 at the school board office.
