But Thursday night against West Feliciana, the 5-A Broncos rolled up 356 yards on the ground as Zachary cruised to a 49-14 win over the 3-A Saints Sept. 29.
Boston Scott returned two punts for touchdowns and also scored twice on offense as the main threat for the Broncos (4-1).
Scott returned the Saints’ first punt 59-yards for the game’s first points with 11:48 left in the opening period. Brandon Delhom’s PAT gave the Broncos a 7-0 lead.
West Feliciana (3-2) evened the game when Greg Freeman scored on a 9-yard pass from Dennis Bell, and Dayne Deham’s kick was good for a 7-7 tie with 9:43 remaining in the first quarter.
The Broncos then retook the lead when Mason Pace scored on a 5-yard run and Delhom’s kick gave Zachary a 14-7 advantage with 3:07 left in the quarter.
Scott later returned a Saints’ punt for 40 yards, and Pace connected with Dillion Beard for the two-point conversion as Zachary led, 22-7 with 9:48 remaining before the halftime.
West Feliciana battled back, aided by a 66-yard pass play from Bell to Freeman and capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run by Javon Emery.
Denham’s PAT closed the gap to 22-14 with 6:56 left in the half, but that would be as close as the Saints could get to the Broncos.
Ron Pennington scored on a 1-yard run at the 4:57 mark, and Scott added a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:45 left as Zachary stormed ahead 36-14 at the break.
After stopping the Saints near the goal line, Pennington broke through the WFHS defense and raced 96 yards for the touchdown with 7:12 left in the third period and the Broncos led, 43-14.
Scott scored his fourth touchdown of the night when he raced 25 yards to the end zone as the Broncos led 49-14 late in the third period.
Pennington finished with 164 yards on nine carries for the Broncos, and Scott added 55 yards on nine carries. Pace chipped in 47 yards on five carries, and Adrien Williams had 42 yards on seven carries. Ladarrius Vessell had 39 yards on six carries.
Pace completed 2-of-8 passes for 25 yards against the Saints after a 24-of-41, 246 yard performance against Dutchtown.
Equine Wilson ran for 38 yards on nine carries for the Saints, while Dedric Cobb chipped in for 16 yards on eight carries.
Bell completed 7-of-25 passes for 147 yards to pace West Feliciana. Greg Freeman had six catches for 142 yards for the Saints.
Zachary opens District 4-5A at Central High School as West Feliciana entertains Baker in the District 6-3A opener on Oct. 7.
