The newest members of the Zachary Rotary Club, along with participants from the Kiwanis Club, Zachary Chamber, Zachary Community Schools, the City of Zachary and local Boy Scout Troops, made a clean sweep of the community on Oct. 21.

Volunteers from the above-mentioned groups and organizations swept the front of businesses located along Hwy. 64/Main St. from Zachary High School to Walmart between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday.

All were invited to bring their own broom or leaf-blower to help beautify the City of Zachary

"Although the project was spearheaded by the Zachary Rotary Club, it is something we thought would benefit the entire community," said new Rotary member Chip Mills. "We feel it's a project that enhances the quality of life, promotes civic pride and engages the community."

"The idea was to have everyone collectively grab a broom and sweep the front of their office buildings, parking lots, sidewalks and driveways in an effort to make Zachary more beautiful," said Carrie McGehee, new Rotarian.

Everyone who participated received a t-shirt designed especially for the event. Proceeds from t-shirt sales were used to pay for street cleaners that later passed along Main Street to clean the sweepers' piles.

Other new Rotary members who helped organize the event were Angie Rabalais, Wes Watts and Jeffery Rack.

All 14 of the new Rotary members say they hope the project will become a bi-annual event.
