Maurice Daniel "Dan" Sturgeon, 81, of Zachary, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice in Baton Rouge. He was a native of Vidalia. He retired as plant manager from Westinghouse Corp. in Atlanta. Visitation at Charlet Funeral Home Inc., Zachary, on Wednesday, Dec. 21, from 9 a.m. until service at 11 a.m., conducted by Dr. Wayne Barnes and Dr. Brythel Brantley. Burial to follow at 2 p.m. in Greenlawn Cemetery in Natchez, Miss., conducted by the Rev. Paul Southerland. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Helen Russell Sturgeon; parents, Lillie Ferrell Sturgeon and Charles M. Sturgeon; brother, C.L. Sturgeon; and sisters, Viola Jensen, Doris Johnese, Bobbie Comer and Oma Brown. He is survived by two daughters, Dorie Poche and her husband, Joe, of Destrehan, and Dana Sturgeon Bradshaw and her husband, Gary, of Baton Rouge; a son, Dan Sturgeon Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Zachary; six grandchildren, Neal Poche, Brian Poche, Jessica Sanchez, Daniel Sturgeon, Christy Sturgeon and Michelle Sturgeon; and seven great-grandchildren, Jose Sanchez Jr., Allison Poche, Luke Sanchez, Nicholas Poche and Nathan Poche, Anna Poche, and Ian Sturgeon. Pallbearers will be Daniel Sturgeon, Brian Poche, Neal Poche, Joe Poche, Gary Bradshaw, and Jose Sanchez Sr. Honorary pallbearers are Leslie Vance and Henry Comer. He was a Master Mason and educated machinist. He enjoyed traveling and cruises with Helen.
