The athletes, their families and head coaches gathered at the WBRZ Telecommunications Center in Baton Rouge on Dec. 15, for the awards celebration. WBRZ’s Sports Director, Michael Cauble, along with sports anchor Chad Sabadie and reporter Michael Kelly, opened the event and congratulated each athlete, coach and school for their outstanding commitment to excellence in athletics and academics.
WBRZ’s Fans’ Choice High School Athlete of the Week award was developed in 1995 with assistance from the Louisiana High School Athletics Association (LHSAA). High school football fans and viewers of WBRZ called in their nominations to the station each week. The top three Fans’ Choice vote-getters were then placed into an online ballot, via www.WBRZ.com, where fans chose each week’s ultimate winner. That winner was honored in the same week with a special story on Channel 2 News.
This year former LSU star and New Orleans Saints standout, Randall “Blue” Gay, was a guest speaker at the ceremony and was selected as the first ever WBRZ Sports 2 Hall of Fame Award recipient.
The 2011 Fans’ Choice winners include quarterback Kyle Cedotal, running back Anthony Bracy and safety Andrew Ayres of Denham Springs High School; quarterback Dash Duncan of St. Michael High School; running back Michael Henry, quarterback Vince Dellocono and running back Julian Darden of Episcopal High School; running back Nick Brossette of University High School; running back Deno Mullens of Redemptorist High School; wide receiver Dillon Beard and running back Boston Scott of Zachary High School; and running back Jarmarcus Jarvis of East Ascension High School.
The Fans’ Choice awards were sponsored by Brian Harris Chrysler-Jeep and Neighbors Federal Credit Union.
