Sheriff Daniel Edwards said Ronnie Saulsberry, 32, of Tickfaw is charged with the second degree murder of Wayne Thompson.
The suspect was in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail serving a five-year drug sentence at the time of his arrest in the murder case.
On June 9, 1998, Thompson was reported missing by his father. He had last been seen two months earlier at a dice game in Tickfaw.
Investigation determined that after the dice game Thompson robbed several subjects with the intentions of buying illegal narcotics. The next night, Thompson’s victims located him and threatened to kill him for robbing them the previous evening.
Thompson disappeared.
In 2004, his remains were recovered in Robert.
Detectives in 2011 received a break in the investigation and this month charged Saulsberry.
Sheriff Edwards did not elaborate on what allegedly tied Saulsberry to the crime.
