"The camp mainly focuses on tactical plays as a team, and not as an individual," Tanner said last Wednesday, June 27, before the bus pulled away from Bronco Stadium.
Twelve teams of girls aged 13-18 will attend the camp this year from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. This is the sixth year ZHS has made the session.
Harbin's camp is designed to provide teams with intense, advanced training and an opportunity to improve both individual and team concepts in a challenging environment.
"It's a great experience for the players," Tanner said. "Besides focusing on their skills as a team, it gives the older girls a chance to bond with some of the younger players before the start of the season."
Once there, the team is assigned a professional, highly skilled college coach and elite college player for two intense training sessions during the day, which promise to sharpen players' technical, passing and shooting skills, Tanner said. In the evening, the teams compete against each other.
Tanner and the other high school coaches traveling with their teams will be in sessions learning about nutrition for female athletes, strength training and soccer conditioning.
