Arrest warrants were signed on Wednesday, Aug. 22, for Brian Lyn Smith, Kyle David Joekel and Brittney Keith, said Trooper Melissa Matey, Louisiana State Police.

Brian Smith and Kyle Joekel are both charged with two counts of first-degree murder of a police officer and three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, Matey said.

Brittney Keith is charged with two counts of principal to first-degree murder of a police officer and three counts of principal to attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, said Matey.

Joekel was released from the hospital Wednesday and booked accordingly. All of the suspects have been relocated to the St. Charles Parish Correctional Center, Matey said.

”As I attended Deputy Nielsen's funeral today, my heart continues to be filled with sadness with the loss of these two fellow police officers,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson. “Our prayers are with the families of the fallen and injured deputies, the sheriff’s office, and all of our greater law enforcement family. State Police is committed to diligent, thorough and complete investigation of these horrific acts. We will continue to leverage our resources in this investigation to ensure that the facts are presented and those responsible for these heinous crimes are arrested.”

UPDATE:

LSP investigators confirmed this evening that Brian Lyn Smith was discharged from the hospital and subsequently booked into the St. John the Baptist Parish Jail on the below charges. Additional charges are forthcoming as detectives continue the investigation.

Kyle David Joekel remains hospitalized at an area hospital to be released at an undetermined time.
