ZHS Boys' game details announced!
Following the March 12, 2011, passing of beloved Zachary Police Chief John Herty, the Zachary High School basketball tournament was renamed last year in his honor.
The late Chief Herty was an announcer for Zachary High basketball games and for the annual ZHS tournament.
Formerly called the Zachary Invitational Basketball Tournament (ZIT), the tournament is now called the John Herty Memorial Tournament and includes boys and girls basketball teams from East Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes.
Basketball action begins Wednesday, Nov. 28, at ZHS and Northwestern Middle School. The tournament will run thru Saturday, Dec. 1.
Admission is $7 per person.
Different this year, all the boys' basketball games will be played in the Northwestern Middle School gym at 5200 E. Central Ave. in Zachary.
Only the consolation, third-place and championship games will be played at ZHS on Saturday, Dec. 1.
The ZHS Boys basketball team will play East Feliciana at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the NMS gym.
Also Wednesday, Northeast High plays Belaire at 3:30 p.m. in Game 1, starting tournament play.
Other boys teams competing Wednesday include:
Ouachita vs. Denham Springs @ 4:45 p.m.
Ruston vs. Christian Life @ 7:15 p.m.
Scotlandville vs. Istrouma @ 8:30 p.m.
All of the girls basketball games will be played at ZHS.
Besides being the tournament hosts, the ZHS Lady Bronco basketball team, led by Head Coach April Brown, will be looking to defend their third-straight tournament champion title!
In last year's tournament, the Lady Broncos defeated the Broadmoor Lady Buccaneers in a nail biting semi-final match, 48 - 45, on Dec. 2. They then advanced to the finals on Dec. 3 where they defeated Peabody High School, 57 - 37.
The ZHS boys basketball team, led by Head Coach Bakari Beckwith, advanced to the semi-final round last year after defeating East Feliciana 64 - 37.
Be sure to drop by ZHS or NMS this week to catch the Broncos on the court for some exciting high school basketball action.
