City officials began cleanup Tuesday, setting about repairing the damage in the City of Baker after Monday's storm, which produced a small tornado that touched down damaging a car wash on Hwy. 19.

Police Chief Mike Knaps said the tornado caused a lot of damage in the center of the city to some neighborhood homes such as downed trees.

East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office deputies also witnessed damage in the northern part of the parish to trees and power lines.

Also on Monday in Ascension Parish, yet another twister touched down severely damaging the 7th District Volunteer Fire Department. The tornado damaged several fire engines, including one truck that now has a small leak.

Firefighters said the damage will not prevent them from doing their job for the citizens and the community in Gonzales.

Authorities said no injuries were reported.

“A devastating storm can sometimes bring out the crooks...not just the opportunistic looters and burglars," said Howard Ward, Public Information Officer with the Baker FD.

City, fire and police personnel say one of their biggest concerns are those individuals who want to take advantage of a bad situation for their own personal gain.

"Some do so by offering to do work at highly inflated prices or some just want money up front before work is done and then they're never to be seen again," Ward said.

Officials from the City of Baker urge citizens who have suffered damage and loss to their properties: "If you are approached by individuals wanting to do the repairs, ask for proof of license, credentials and personal references!"

"Do some research on these individuals before allowing anyone to do work for you," Ward says, "and never pre-pay or give money to these people before the work is done or unless you personally know them and are absolutely certain of their honesty and integrity."
