After an investigation concluded Thursday by the Baker Police Narcotics Division, assisted by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Narcotics Division, a 30-year-old-Baton Rouge man was arrested on weapons and narcotics violations.

Officers and EBRSO SWAT members executed a narcotics search warrant on Jan. 24 at 4711 Blount Rd., #13, where they arrested the homeowner, David Dewayne Hughes, 30, after finding illegal narcotics and six firearms, said Baker Police Chief Mike Knaps.

Five of the weapons were reported stolen from a residence in East Baton Rouge Parish. Agents also seized four rifles including an SKS assault rifle with a high capacity 30-round magazine, one shotgun, one handgun and several boxes of ammunition, Knaps said.

In addition, over 40 Schedule II and Schedule IV pills were found, as well as two digital scales and an unspecified amount of marijuana.

Hughes, a convicted felon from a second-degree battery offense, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and charged with six counts of a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, five counts of illegal possession of a stolen firearm, six counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance while in possession of a firearm, possession with intent to distribute Schedule II diphenexyate, possession with intent to distribute Schedule IV carisoprodol, possession of Schedule I marijuana and two counts possession of drug paraphernalia.

"While we speak about gun control issues, it's the convicted felons like this guy who buy stolen guns off the street who are killing young people...everyday around this country," Chief Knaps said. "We are pleased to have him off the streets and these weapons in control for the safety of our citizens in this parish. I support back ground checks, but they don't really matter to these guys! I'm sure the legal owner of these weapons will be happy to have them back."
