At approximately 6:30 p.m., July 4, the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call regarding a disturbance on Cypress Island Highway.
Deputies responding to the scene encountered the suspect, 23-year-old Othello Pierre. He attempted to flee from the scene and was tased and subsequently apprehended a short time later following a foot pursuit.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 11 p.m.
Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect had used narcotics and alcohol prior to the deputies’ arrival.
Witnesses on the scene indicated to deputies that the suspect had been awake for several days prior to the incident. Autopsy results are pending.
