The Rayville Hornets earned a regional playoff berth by defeating the Winnfield Tigers 46-19 in a bi-district game Friday.

The Tigers came out to a quick six-point lead when Alonzo Moore Moore hit Tyrone Wilson with a 65-yard touchdown pass. The extra point failed, but the Tigers were still up 6-0.

The Hornets answered with Phaquinton Lawson’s 17-yard pass to Ellis Hamp. Lawson also booted in the point after touchdown to take the lead at 7-6 and the Hornets never trailed again for the rest of the game. Lawson added to the score later in the first quarter with a 11-yard pass to Devario Thornton. Again, Lawson’s PAT was good and the first quarter ended with the Hornets ahead 14-6.

The Hornet defense shut the Tigers down in the second quarter. In addition, Rayville’s Ashton Williams recovered a Winnfield fumble in the end zone to bring the score to 20-6 in favor of the Hornets at the half.

Dantre Davis scored for Rayville in the third quarter with a seven-yard run to widen that lead to 26-6.

Winnfield’s D.K. Hendricks dove across the end zone on a one-yard run to tighten the score to 26-13.

However, Hamp made another touchdown for the Hornets on an 11-yard run, bringing the score to 32-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Winnfield continued fighting in the final quarter, when Moore scored on another one-yard plunge, bringing the Tigers up to trail 26-19.

However Hamp added in two more Hornet touchdowns for 38 and five yards with Lawon kicking a pair of extra points to make the final score 46-19 in favor or Rayville.

Once again, Rayville rolled up more than 400 yards offense in the game with 216 yards rushing and 210 yards passing with Lawson hitting 11 of 17 pass attempts.

Winnfield had 113 yards passing and 92 passing with two completions on eight attempts.

Rayville’s rushing leaders were Hamp with 26 carries for 142 yards and Davis with seven carries for 47. Ellis also had one reception for 17 yards.

Winzell Robinson was Rayville’s top receiver with five carries for 96 yards. Kenny Bell had three catches for 58 yards and Thornton carried once for 39 yards.

The victory brings Rayville’s record to 8-3 and puts them in line to play 9-1 Parkview Baptist in the regional tournament Friday.
