The soft, warm glow of an old-fasihioned , oil lamp lights the way for the pen to ink the words of the writer across the paper. Yep! There wuz my Dad, Lee Lanier, writing the Editorial fer next week's "News Digest" at 2:00 a.m. When axed why he wrote in the middle of the night, he said, "Because there are no auras." Aura? What is an aura? It is an invisible, distinctive thought or attitude sent out from by a person without being spoken. He said he didn't want other thoughts bumping into his. Wal! Whatcha know about thta? Ya' know he wuz right. Each of us has our own attitude or aura - it shows in our faces. This wuz in the early Thirties - the First Depression. We lived in town, but had no electricity or gas. We used oil lamps at night, two fireplaces, a potbelly wood burning heater and Mom cooked on a cast iron, wood burning stove. We did have water and a batter operated ratio. Maybe it wuz because, we could't pay fer utilities fer the house and the newspaper plant at the same time. Of course, the income making the newspaper come first.

The reason fer telling ya'll the above is so ya' can see how the splendid, beautiful snow on 12-10-08 threw me back to the "Thirties." This is being written by camp light - no power. My two neighbors, David and Dione Franklin and Jerry, his wife, Shonda and their two sons, Jerry, Jr. and Bob, have evaucated to Hotels in Hammond - due to power outages. Gee Whiz, Coach - We made it through without all what we got now - we'll still make it.

Ya' see - this 8" of snow (can ya' believe Amite had 8" of snow) is lak most thangs beautiful - it has its bad side. Snow breaks the limbs and electric wires. So - we jes' gotta wait til Entergy gets all out eletric thangs running again. Meantimes - have patience!

Ya'll might know this Fella - Dr. John McDonald of Sherveport. He is a surgeon and has saved many lives over many years. He had a small part in the movie "Steel Magnolias." He is now seriously ill. A friend of his who lives in Naw Leans called me and axed us to put him on our Prayer list. Wal! We'll sho' nuff do that. Thar is Power in Prayer. So, God, we pray you will take care of Dr. McDonald. Heal him and return him to his practice of medicine so he can continue to save lives wid yo' help.

Lots of accidents happen in the home. Marguerite Durnin, who lives out Hillsdale way, fell in her home and busted a few ribs. Now that's a painful injury and she will probably have a long, painful recovery. May the Good Lord send her comfort as she heals.

Doncha know the kids of Amite will long remember the big 8" snow of 2008 what fell in Amite. Speck' the adults won't forget it any time soon. Ya' see something as beautiful as new fallen snow can create a lot of headaches - such as 18-wheeler jack-knifing all up and down I-55, cars in route to somewhere in a hurry - sliding in the snow and cracking up - power outages causing havoc wid our home lives. Wal! Shucks! Iffen we made it through all them hurricanes, rekon we kin shake off a little snow. It sho' wuz thrilling to watch them big snowflakes cover our World wid a white blanket. It wuz jes as thrillin' to watch the snow melt and go away - after breaking tree limbs and leaving us widout power. Thanks' to the Entergy workers, they got us going again soon as they could. Thanks, Fellas.

One mo' week and the Ho! Ho! Ho! Guy is gonna be flying thro' the sky. Doncha' hope he stops at yo' house?
