CROWLEY – On Monday, January 12, Mermentau Elementary students in grades three through seven shared a unique experience. They were given the opportunity to vote using official machines provided courtesy of the Secretary of State’s Voter Outreach Division.
Votes were cast that morning for the Louisiana Young Reader’s Choice Award, which is a reading enrichment program of the Louisiana Center for the Book in the State Library of Louisiana.
“The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of our state by motivating them to participate in the selection and recognition of outstanding books,” said Dawn Williams, library media specialist at Evangeline and Mermentau Elementary schools.
Through this program students may read or listen to the books and vote for their favorite ones. Louisiana teachers and librarians agree that this is a great way to involve students in literature, while giving them an excitement about reading.
The 2009 book winners will be announced during the March meeting of the Louisiana Librarians’ Association Conference.
