WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Charles W. Boustany, Jr., R-Southwest Louisiana, tonight urged President Obama to protect the doctor-patient relationship following the President’s address to Congress.

“I appreciate President Obama’s commitment to improving healthcare in America, and I think we can work together to achieve many of our common goals,” Boustany said. “However, during my time as a doctor and now in Congress, many proposals fall short because they fail to keep the doctor-patient relationship at the center of our healthcare system. This relationship, the most basic in our healthcare system, must remain a priority. If a doctor and patient are unable to make informed medical decisions, quality suffers and often costs increase.”

Boustany, a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, advocates lowering healthcare costs and increasing quality by expanding HealthIT usage, promoting health information to patients and doctors and allowing portability of health insurance.
